Uptown and Downtown Charlotte Condos, Lofts, and Homes

People from all walks of life are migrating to the lofts and condos in Uptown / Downtown Charlotte.

Take Leslie and Kevin Archer. They live at 230 South Tryon in a 3,829-square-foot penthouse condominium. The glass-walled views are so entrenched in the uptown skyline that Leslie says she sometimes forgets she’s not outside.

The Archers lived in Hickory for 12-year and often drove to Charlotte for Panthers games and dinners, testing the Uptown waters by staying at the Omni Hotel. With two kids already grown and two in high school, they decided an urban lifestyle would suit them well.

Leslie Archer said their condominium and location are perfect for entertaining. For events like family weddings, out-of-town guests can stay in Uptown Charlotte hotels, then walk to their place. They’re also just a few blocks from their beloved Panthers games and can walk to museums, shows and Reid’s Fine Foods. “It’s funny to be the person who lives here when everyone else is visiting,” Leslie Archer said. “It was the easiest move I’ve ever had … it’s a really exciting time to be here.

“I call this my little treehouse,” Gary Hurt, a senior financial analyst at Bank of America, says of his 230 South Tryon balcony, which is shaded by South Tryon Street’s trees. He and his partner, Wayne Penninger, turned two fourth-floor condos into one. Also on that floor are Penninger’s parents, Lake Norman residents whose condo is a second home. “We wanted this address – to be here in Uptown Charlotte.” Hurt also loves his view from the fourth floor. “At the St. Patrick’s Day parade, we were able to sit here and people watch.”

“Living on Tryon Street is a `born and raised’ Charlotte girl’s dream,” says Vani Hari, a vice president with Wachovia Corporate Investment Banking Technology, who lives with her husband, Finley Clarke. “The best thing about it is never getting in my car to go to work or grocery shop. It feels good knowing that I am taking a positive step in saving the environment.”
